Oh, I thought with the subject line "Speaking of the Internet" that you were
actually speaking of the Internet.
I started my genealogy in 1975, and it was all on paper until 1985 when I got
my first genealogy computer program, and 1990 before I started using the
Internet.
So that was 10 years without computers, and 15 years without the Internet.

Quite.
I chack Facebook maybe once a fortnight. There are a couple of groups for
family names I'm interested in, but that's about it. I keep asking people not
to leave me messages on Facebook, because I rarely see them, but some people
still do, even though my e-mail address is on Favebook if they've lost it.

"free". Notice the quotes? Once you pay for a subscription, there's no
charge any time you choose to look up something. I got my total money's
worth the first day in the money I saved by being able to search 40 or 50
individual census records from the comfort of home with a few mouse clicks.

I started my one surname research in the early 1970's. Once I exhausted
information from living family members, my search involved writing to about
400 Remick's found in a library collection of US phone books. Census
searches were done through a local LDS Family History Center, spending $3.50
or so for each reel of film and waiting several weeks for it to arrive.

It was in '85 that I first started my research, without the Internet. That
was the aim of my question. How and how often did you do this before the
Internet? I have some of the original trees that I drew on graph paper.
They're about 3' by 2'. It was in mid '92 that I got on the Internet. I
went to the major Internet sites, eventually, after I started using this

Net.roots was one of the early USENET groups. Dunno the exact
creation date for the group, but it was in the 1980-1983 window.
That was back in the days when I could read all of USENET with
my first cup of coffee at RAND, and we still addressed mail with
bang paths. ;)

This brief comment comes across as sarcasm, whether it was meant to be or
not. Each person has their reasons for being or not wanting to be on
Facebook. I found it to be, in a very short time, a thundering waste of
time. When I saw that one of my potential 'friends' was purchasing and
raising weird little virtual animals that would 'die' if she didn't feed
